Heroes’ Square (Hősök tere) is one of the most iconic landmarks of not just Budapest, but the whole of Hungary. The immense square features monumental statues of great Hungarian historical figures. Set at the end of the prestigious Andrássy Avenue, the statues and the great obelisk at its center, dominate the landscape even from far away.
Hop off from your Budapest tour bus at the dedicated Heroes Square stop and soak in the area. Surrounded by the Museum of Fine Arts at one side, and the BUdapest Kunsthalle on the other, the square is essentially the number one entry point to the city’s largest public park as well - that also houses the Széchenyi Thermal Baths, Hop on Hop off Budapest’s next stop!
As one of the largest squares of the city, Heroes’ Square is often populated by events and people. Political rallies, chariot and horse races (yes, you read that right), music festivals, or even on the most boring weekdays, skaters and skateboarders! Tourist buses also like to offload their eager visitors as there are several museums and attractions nearby.
Since the square is very spacious, it will never feel cramped with visitors. That being said, the best time to visit Heroes’ Square is around sunset, when the light hits the monumental statues just the right way! Mind you, during the summer, and especially around noon, temperatures on the hot tiles of the square can reach the upper 30 degrees Celsius!
